Quick Chores That Will Keep Your NYC Home Clean All Week Long

SKYLINE 2Life in the Big Apple can be pretty hectic, which means a lot of the chores you need to do to keep your home clean can get thrown by the wayside. But if you want to avoid major cleaning overhauls in the future, these tasks are absolutely essential. A quick 20 minutes a day can stop your weekends from turning into an all day clean-a-thon!

You can spare 20 minutes to do these few small chores, can’t you?

Do the Dishes

After all the work you put in cooking the meal, you may not feel like doing more to clean it up. However, this is absolutely crucial if you want to keep your kitchen clean and bug-free.

Take Out the Trash

This may not be a daily task if you live on your own, but don’t let the trash fill up without taking it out. Take it out right when you notice it’s full. This will keep you from procrastinating and shoving more garbage into an already full bag.

Do a Load of Laundry

Whether you decide to do jeans on Monday and lights on Tuesday or choose a more idiosyncratic method, you should designate time each day to doing just one load of laundry. Alternating which loads you do on which day of the week will help you keep a routine. Doing a little each day will prevent laundry from doing a continual, time consuming process on the weekend. And bonus! You’ll always have clean underwear.

Keep a Checklist

Pick one day of the week to write down a list of cleaning-related goals you want to accomplish for the week. Whether it’s cleaning that cruddy stuff out of the toilet, organizing your junk drawer, or cleaning left overs out of the fridge, writing them down will help motivate you to get them done. As silly as it may sound, having a list to check off will help you feel like you’ve accomplished something and keep your cleaning on track.

Designate One Area for Junk

Don’t let clutter accumulate around your home. Even when you don’t count your significant other or kids, stuff just seems to start gathering on the floors, furniture and any other flat, horizontal surface. And the more it piles up, the more likely you are to throw more junk there, which just exacerbates the problem. If you see something, pick it up and put it back in it’s home right then. Or go around with a basket and have your family sort through and put their stuff away. If an item is homeless, put it in your junk drawer until it finds a home. Purge this drawer of unnecessary stuff once or twice a month to keep your home tidy.

Make It a Habit…

If taking 15 to 20 minutes out of your day isn’t a habit, try to make it one. The more you do it, the more routine it will be come and eventually you won’t even think about it. You’ll just do it and it won’t even feel like a chore.

…Or Get Someone Else to Do It

If you really can’t spare even this much time to small chores, you may want to consider hiring a professional cleaning service to come weekly (or however often suits your needs) to take care of this for you.
