Organize Your Closet Once and For All

file0002099842296Did a bomb go off in your closet or have you just not cleaned it in the last few months? It may not matter – the result is always the same. Clothes and shoes and miscellaneous items are scattered on the floor, stuffed onto shelves, and generally making it impossible to find anything you need.

And since New York City is one of the world’s great fashion capitals, you’re going to want to get everything organized so you can build your outfits without getting overwhelmed by your options or searching for that one accessory you know you have but just can’t find.

And bonus! Taking some time to organize your closet won’t just give you more space and make it easier to find things – it’ll make you happier, too. Life can feel chaotic sometimes, but when you take control of something more manageable (like cleaning and organizing your closet) it can help you feel more in control of things overall.

It’s time to finally get this whole closet thing figured out – once and for all. And we’re here to help you through it.

Purge Your Closet

A great way to start is by taking everything out of your closet and sorting it into piles of stuff that you want to keep, donate, and throw away. If you haven’t used it or looked for it in last year, chances are you won’t miss it when it’s gone. Get rid of it! If it’s still serviceable, toss it in the donate pile and let a fashionista who may not be as fortunate as you put it to good use. If you have a friend who’s been eyeballing it, give it to her. If no one’s going to want to wear that thing, get rid of it.

And don’t keep something because it’s cute and might fit in the future! Whether it’s a pair of fat pants you’re keeping “just in case” or a too-small shirt that you want to fit in “one day,” get rid of it. Focus on what you need right now. If you manage to lose the weight, reward yourself with a shopping spree. And that pair of fat pants is just a crutch, you don’t need it!

Empty It Completely

We did mention this, but we think it’s important to emphasize. While it may seem unnecessary at first, emptying your entire closet is the only way you’re going to see what you have, what you need, and what you can rid of. Organizing your closet is about maximizing space, and you won’t know what kind of space you have to work with unless it’s bare.

And you’re also want to give your closet the cleaning it’s needed for the last half a century and that’s always easier to do when nothing’s in the way. We know NYC apartments don’t leave you a whole lot of closet space (if you have one at all!) but you may have more room than you think. So empty it out entirely! No excuses!


You really don’t want to put everything back into a dirty closet. That just perpetuates the notion that you can treat your closet like a place to dump the stuff you don’t want to deal with. This is supposed to be once-and-for-all, so you’re going to want to start off on the right foot.

So with everything out of the way, take a few minutes to wipe down the shelves and any other storage units you may have in there. You can even take a few extra minutes to wipe down the walls and use your vacuum’s extension to get cobwebs and dust out of all the corners. Vacuum the carpet if you have one or sweep and mop the tiles if you don’t. Take this opportunity to clean any lighting fixtures or change blown out light bulbs.

If you found some stuff you definitely want to keep that may be a little dusty or dingy, take the time to clean that too. You want to put clean stuff back into a clean closet. So before you put everything back in there, take the time to wash or clean it.

Get Organized

Now that you’ve gotten rid of the stuff you don’t use anymore, take a look at what you have left. Is it mostly clothes? Do you store decorations in there, too? Think about the space (or lack thereof) and how you can maximize it.

You may want to stop at the dollar store and buy some bins for stuff you only use at certain times of the year – like your winter clothes or holiday decorations. Stacking plastic bins are great for larger items. You can get some neat decorative baskets for smaller items that need to be loose but not scattered everywhere.

Or Just Get Help
