When you wash your clothes, you want them to be clean when the job is done. Stains mark your clothes and turn into an embarrassment if someone else notices, but you can get them cleaner with the right detergent. Before you go to the store and spend money on the most expensive brands, consider making your own laundry detergent at home. Here are a few recipes you can use to get your clothes clean and leave them smelling fresh – without the high price tag.

Cooktop Method

It takes a little time to mix up the detergent, but this recipe works as well as top-quality detergents. You’ll need a bar of soap, three gallons of water, ½-cup borax, and one-cup of washing soda. You’ll also need a 5-gallon bucket and a small pot for melting the soap. Start by putting four cups of water into a pan. Slice or shred the bar of soap into it and cook it until the soap is almost completely dissolved.

Next, put the soapy water into the bucket along with three gallons of water. Add the borax and washing soda. Mix the concoction to blend it, put the lid on it and let it sit overnight. The next day, you’ll have laundry soap that’s ready for use and quite a bit cheaper than what’s carried in the grocery stores.

Powdered Detergent

If you prefer powdered detergent to the liquid, then you can also make that. Simply use a food processor to grind up the soap until it’s a fine powder. Next, add two parts washing soda, two parts Borax and one part soap to the mixture. You can also mix in a little baking soda to boost the cleaning power. Keep it in a sealed container, and it will be ready for use when it’s time to wash the clothes.

No Grating Required

If you don’t want to grate the soap, then you can try something a little different. Instead of using a bar of soap, use two tablespoons of Dawn dish soap. Mix it in a one-gallon jug along with three tablespoons of Borax and three tablespoons of washing soda. Add four cups of boiling water and swirl the jug until all the ingredients mix. Allow it to cool, then add cold water to fill the container.

Vinegar Mixture

Vinegar is known for its cleaning power, and you can mix it into your own laundry detergent. Use one-cup of white vinegar, one-cup of baking soda, one-cup of washing soda and ¼-cup of liquid castile soap. Mix the ingredients well and place them in a sealed container. It will start as a paste, but it will break down as you stir it into a powdered detergent that’s very effective.

Making your own laundry detergent can help you save money, but it also takes up a little time.
