Cleaning Your Home for a Vacation

Before leaving for a vacation, one of the items on your to-do list should be to clean and prepare your home before you leave. I know it may seem silly to clean your house, even though nobody is using it for a few days or weeks, but the benefits of leaving a clean house when you go for a vacation can put your mind at ease.

Before you leave for vacation, be sure to empty all of your clothes from your washer and dryer to keep them from molding or wrinkling. It’s also important to be sure your laundry or mud room is clean so it will make it easier for you to return with your luggage and any extra items you may be bringing back from your trip.

Taking the time to clean and prepare your bathrooms and kitchen will also be a great benefit to you while you’re away. If you want to keep bugs and pests out of your home while you are gone, be sure to do a thorough cleaning of your dining area and kitchen. Be sure to surface clean your bathroom and make sure the floor and tub or shower is cleaned to deter any silverfish from taking nest in your bathroom while you are gone.

If someone is going to be checking on your home while you are out, it is important to make sure your home is tidy so they have a pleasant experience while checking to make sure everything is okay. This will also ensure that if anything has occurred like a burglary or if a fixture breaks, it will make it easier to spot the damage and get the correct help while you are away.

Be sure to find a place for your pets if you are going to be gone for an extended amount of time and do not have an involved pet sitter who can check on your pets often. Unattended pets tend to get bored, lonely, depressed or frustrated and may take these feelings out on your furniture or carpet. Coming home to a pet’s mess is probably not on your list of priorities, so be a responsible pet owner and be sure to have someone check on them often or take them to the vet or a kennel to keep them from getting lonely or bored and make sure they are cared for.

Another important tip to remember when leaving for vacation is that most of your appliances will still use energy while you are gone. Be sure to turn down or unplug any unnecessary electrical appliances or fixtures so that they do not cost you unnecessary money while you are not in your home.

Be sure to do any necessary yard work before you leave your home for vacation. An unkempt lawn is a telltale sign that the residents are away. Mow your lawn and trim any hedges or plants that need to be tended to before you leave for your vacation. A manicured lawn can keep any unwanted attention away from your home while you are gone.

And lastly, coming home from a vacation to a dirty house is not only unpleasant, but it can really put a damper on your vacation time. Cleaning and maintaining your home before leaving for a vacation can enhance your vacation experience and make coming home a pleasure instead of a chore.
