Cleaning Resolutions You Should Keep This New Year

ball dropAs one year comes to an end and another begins, we’re always inclined to do a little soul searching. And if you’re honest with yourself, you could really do a little better at keeping your home clean and organized. But you know how New Year’s Resolutions go. You start out strong and have the best intentions, but slowly your resolve starts to fizzle. You procrastinate and forget and by the time you think about it again another new year has arrived.

But this year we’re going to help you stick to your guns by setting realistic goals and laying everything out for you.

Buy a Calendar

Whether you like puppies or kittens, cars or motorcycles, or you favorite cartoon character, we suggest getting a new calendar that’s separate from the one you use to write down the kiddies’ doctor appointments. Hang it somewhere visible that you can’t avoid – like on the fridge, a kitchen wall, or on the inside of a cabinet door you’re always rummaging through.

Now, you can decide to write up your chores each month, or you can spend a little extra time planning out the whole year. We recommend planning the whole because setting aside time to write up a cleaning calendar may not be a priority once you get back in the everyday stuff. It’s easy to procrastinate, so do your future self a favor and plan in advance! It’ll be much easier to stay on track, but the beautiful thing about this plan is that even if you get sidetracked, you can look back at your calendar and get right back on track.

Start With Your Daily Cleaning Tasks

There are a few small chores you can do each day that will make you feel like your home is clean – even if there are some bigger things you eventually need to get done. But you don’t want to wait and do a huge cleaning every month or so. That’s why you need to make a list of all the stuff you can do everyday. This might include stuff like:

  • Make the bed
  • Put dirty clothes in the hamper
  • Wipe down the sink and counters in the bathroom
  • Wipe down the sink and counters in the kitchen
  • Wash the dishes (or run the dishwasher)
  • Pick up with clutter (whatever kind your family generates – mail, toys, papers)
  • Spot cleaning / vacuuming

Once you have a complete list, separate it into two parts – the stuff you can do in the morning as you get ready for work and the stuff you can do when you get home at night while dinner’s cooking.

Your list may look like this:


  • Make the bed
  • Put dirty clothes in the hamper
  • Wipe down bathroom sink and counters
  • Put away clean dishes


  • Wash the dishes (or run the dishwasher)
  • Wipe down kitchen sink, table and counters
  • Pick up clutter (put kids’ toys away, open your mail and organize or throw away, pick up the receipts / papers / crumpled things that come out of pockets)
  • Vacuum / sweep high traffic areas

Now, you can write each task out on each day, but that’s tedious. Make it fun (and faster) by using cute stamps or stickers that symbolize your morning and evening chores. Then just keep a list of what each stamp means taped somewhere on the calendar. This will make it easy to remember everything you want to do without cluttering your calendar.

Plan Out Your Weekly Chores

These chores are usually designated to a specific day of the week. For example, Saturday is laundry day and Sunday is devoted to cleaning the kitchen. You can organize this any way you want, but here’s a guideline for what you should be including

  • Mondays: Bedrooms (wash linens, empty your dryer’s lint trap, vacuum, general pick up of anything that’s laying around)
  • Tuesdays: Kitchen (clean appliances, scrub the stovetop, disinfect counters / knobs / handles, etc.)
  • Wednesdays: Bathrooms (wipe down mirrors, wash curtains and rugs, clean shower walls and tub, scrub the toilet, etc.)
  • Thursdays: Common Areas (deep vacuum the living room and/or den, furniture, curtains, mop and sweep floors
  • Fridays: Paperwork (sort out and pay your bills, throw away any clutter that’s accumulated, file any important documents, etc.)
  • Saturday: Organization Day (a place for everything and everything in its place!)
  • Sunday: Rest! (But don’t forget your daily chores)

Major Cleaning Tasks Can Be Done Monthly

Each week, pick one major chore that needs to be done each month and do it. These are the things that get commonly overlooked but are important to really keeping your house clean. This is also an opportunity to look for any signs of damage that may otherwise not be obvious.

Now these are just examples and you’re going to want to add on things that may be special to your home – like skylights or a balcony.

  • Week 1: Dust and clean windows, floorboards, ceiling fans, decorations
  • Week 2: Vacuum air vents, change air filters, wipe down points of contact (light switches, tv remotes, drawer handles / knobs and other things people are always touching)
  • Week 3: Clean the fridge (inside and out) and wipe down walls
  • Week 4: If you have kids, clean play areas, organize bookshelves, and anywhere you store toys. If you don’t, focus on any “office” type area in your home. Wipe down the keyboard, mouse, and any other desk supplies. Organize any loose papers.

Don’t Forget to Schedule Time to Tackle Other Organizational Goals

You can also use this calendar to schedule regular maintenance tasks like cleaning the gutters or helping schedule time to tackle the other organizational goals you want to tackle, like sorting through the boxes in the attic or purging your closet. The key is decide how long of a timeframe you’re going to give yourself, pick a day (or days) that you’re going to devote a certain amount of time to each task so you can have it finished by the deadline you set for yourself.
