How to Create a Doable Cleaning Schedule for the Entire Family

If you’re having a rough time juggling work and dealing with other important facets of your regular routines, then you should consider getting the whole family to pitch in on the housekeeping.

The best way to go about it is by creating a chore list that’s separated into daily, weekly, and monthly tiers:

  1. Daily

The daily chores should be a reflection of your everyday routines as a family. The key is to return the things you use to their original state in order to have them ready to use again. To make that possible:

  • Check the mail.
  • Tidy up the house by returning things back to where they belong.
  • Plan your meals ahead of time to have the ingredients to prepare them.
  • After all meals, clean up the kitchen: do the dishes, wipe off the counter and sweep the floors.
  • Check for trash that needs to be taken out from areas of high traffic.
  • Throw dirty clothes into laundry baskets.
  • Do a quick cleaning of the bathroom sinks and tubs,
  • Make your bed to have it ready to slip into.

Once you’re aware of what needs to be done on a day-to-day basis, you’re ready to list your weekly tasks.

  1. Weekly

It’s best to separate this list over a 6-7 day time span, as you might want to keep one day off from doing any major chores. Each week, you should clean the kitchen and bathroom floors, and make sure your house is tidy.

Then, give your kitchen a thorough cleaning by the middle of the week and make sure your trash bags are out before the time your trash pick-up is scheduled. Clean out your refrigerator by Friday and prepare your menu along with a new grocery list. Dust and vacuum wherever necessary.

By Saturday, you should be doing the laundry and changing all the bed sheets. If you don’t have time to deep clean all areas of your home, choose at least one to two sections to deep clean (and you might even want to save one to do on Sunday) each week. This is a good time to clean the front porch and attend to gardening duties, too.

  1. Monthly

Each month, you should clean your home’s windows and blinds, along with the ceiling fans. Wipe off the grease from the walls of your kitchen and clean behind your fridge and oven.

Drawers and closets should be organized, and carpets as well as upholstery should be steamed. Additionally, your air vents and mattresses should be vacuumed each month. Afterwards, get to the paperwork, including clearing out the things you don’t need, such as old magazines.

Finalize Your Chore List

Once you’re done listing all the chores to be done, determine which family member should be in charge of each specific chore to designate the task to them. Keep in mind that the ability of your children to complete certain chores will depend on their age group. Now you can create a checklist next to the tasks.

When your checklist is ready, just create a container for each member of your family to have the cleaning supplies they will need, and of course, supervise children using cleaning products.

You should check your family’s calendar to decide the proper dates and times that work with each member’s availability. Lastly, hold a family meeting to discuss the new schedule and you can even demonstrate how the housework is to be done.
